Foreword
Elkhorn Public Schools LIBRARY MEDIA CURRICULUM Fall, 2001
What is the rationale for the Elkhorn Public Schools Library Media program?
The Elkhorn Public Schools provides a student-centered curriculum in which the library media program plays a central role in preparing students for lifelong learning in the 21st century. ÒInformation literacy--the ability to find and use information--is the keystone of lifelong learning. Creating a foundation for lifelong learning is at the heart of the school library media program.Ó (Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, 1998, p. 1) TodayÕs library media center is an active, technology-rich learning environment with a wide array of information resources. The focus of the program is on the process of learning rather than dissemination of information. The effective school library media program depends on the collaborative efforts of all those who are responsible for student learning: library media staff, administrators, teachers, parents, and community. The program is fully integrated with the school curriculum so that students utilize the library media center to meet real needs for information and to become users of a wide range of information resources. Access is flexible so that students may find resources and staff available at the point of need. A collaborative, integrated, and flexible library media program that meets the needs of Elkhorn Public Schools students and staff is the focus of this curriculum.
What are the Information Literacy Standards for student learning?
The Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning were developed by the American Library Association and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology and published in Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, 1998.
