Introduction
The Nebraska Standards identify what students in our schools are to know and be able to do. We call them "content standards.'' Content standards are set for reading/writing, mathematics, science and social studies/history. The standards state what students should know and be able to do by the end of first grade, fourth grade, eighth grade and twelfth grade. They were written for all students.
The standards are not minimum standards of learning for students; they are challenging and rigorous. We expect the standards to stretch students to new heights of academic achievement. To reach that goal, teachers, students, parents and schools must set higher expectations based on standards.
People across the state helped develop the standards through extensive public hearings. Focus groups and town hall meetings were conducted statewide, providing many opportunities for people to comment on the standards. In addition, parents and educators worked together to write the draft standards for review.
The standards presented in this document are the position of the State Board of Education.
This document is a tool for students, educators, parents, the public and policy makers to guide schools to provide the best possible education for all Nebraska students. The standards are not intended to limit local school decisions about the education of the students they serve. The standards should encourage community wide discussions about what teachers should teach and what students should learn.
The Stanford Achievement Test, Ninth Edition (SAT-9) was published by Harcourt Brace in 1995-1996. The Reviewer's Editions outlines specific objectives.
The Princeton Review publishes a study guide for the American College Test titled 'Cracking the ACT.' This guide provides objectives and sample tests for the English, Reading and Mathematics sections of the ACT.
The National Science Education Standards were published by the National Academy Press in 1996.
