HS Family Consumer Science

STANDARDS: Objectives for this course are linked directly to the National Standards for Family & Consumer Sciences Education (FCSNS). The national comprehensive standards are listed with the course objective; the content standards are listed with the unit objectives; and the content competencies are listed with each lesson objective.
Family & Consumer Science "standards" (FCS) listed with each objective are taken from the Nebraska Family & Consumer Sciences Essential Learnings. A listing of links to "L.E.A.R.N.S." (Leading Educational Achievement through Rigorous Nebraska Standards) can also be found in the catalog of Nebraska Family & Consumer Sciences Essential Learnings, showing the connections of FCS objectives to those found in the math, science, social studies, and reading/writing areas.

Teen Living

TEEN LIVING is a comprehensive course, covering numerous areas of study in the field of Family & Consumer Science. Students will be introduced to the subjects of Human Development, Textiles, Clothing, & Design, Foods and Nutrition, Housing & Interior Design, and Consumer & Family Resources. The focus of Human Development will be on goal-setting, decision-making, problem-solving, conflict resolution, relationships, and the importance of family as the basic unit in society. In the area of Textiles, Clothing, & Design students will demonstrate hand-sewing skills, reading and following a pattern guide, and construction of a project using machine-stitching. The emphasis of foods and nutrition will be on daily dietary guidelines, reading and following recipe directions, and preparation of food representing all food groups. In Housing & Interior Design students will draw room plans to scale and use the element of color in interior design. The concentration from Consumer & Family resources is on personal finances. Career identification will be a component of each unit.

Human Development

The student will examine influences affecting the individual's struggle for independence, including the physical, social, intellectual, emotional, and economic factors that must be considered. The student will explore the facets of relationships, examine the family as the basic unit of society, and demonstrate how individuals can effectively cope with the resolution of conflict and management of crisis. The student will explore careers related to human/child development, specifically addressing the concerns and well-being of individuals and families.

Textiles, Clothing, & Design

The learner will complete a unit(s) of instruction and/or practice, as assigned, to prepare them to complete a textile project and meet the standards of quality specified by the instructor.

Housing & Interior Design

The learner will demonstrate the efficient use of space in drafting a room/floor plan to scale, complete with furnishings. The learner will be able to use the elements and principles effectively in a housing related area. The learner will be able to trace a pathway of preparation toward a career in the housing industry.

Foods & Nutrition

The learner will be able to identify and/or list vocabulary and facts related to general food and nutrition information. The learner will be able to discuss general information about foods from a variety of categories, and then follow directions and work cooperatively with others in the safe and efficient preparation of actual foods from those categories. The learner will explore careers in the fields of nutrition, food production, food service, food science, and dietetics.
